About the record
“Turn It Up, Faggot” is the debut album from indie rock group Deerhunter. The album’s title refers to a taunt that was shouted at the band during early live shows although the album is also referred to as self-titled. The album’s notes dedicate the album to Justin Bosworth, the band’s original bassist, who died in 2004. Lead singer Bradford Cox did the cover photography, typography and montage for the album. For the front cover of the record, Bradford Cox took a picture of Jared Swilley from the Black Lips, recognisable to some because of the tattoo on his arm.

Bedhead – Whatfunlifewas
Bedhead – WhatFunLifeWas
Allmusic Review
It didn’t seem like it at the time, but with the appearance of this, Bedhead’s debut, and Low’s own first album some months later, the zeitgeist of post-grunge indie rock started to shift toward something more reflective and restrained. Not that WhatFunLifeWas doesn’t steer clear of loud moments, to be sure; many of the songs use swelling transitions from quieter to noisier performance and back, all while avoiding the abrupt soft-loud-soft cliché of the time. However, even at the band’s most explosive, there’s less a sense of getting ripped out of your head on sound than there is a tension between steady, careful performance (drummer Martinez especially so) and more wide-ranging power. The various comparisons to the Velvet Underground, Joy Division, and Spacemen 3 all make a certain sense, but even at this early stage of the band’s life, Bedhead have much more of an individual sensibility, something that fuses and looks beyond rather than simply rehashing. Things sometimes can be a touch more playful than expected — “To the Ground” is almost jaunty — but otherwise the moods are calm and often blue, and a large part of that lies in the singing. Matt Kadane’s soft, understated semi-drawl doesn’t slot easily into comparisons, and its contrast with the band’s music is often striking. “Haywire,” an epic guitar blast with an almost giddy surge to music and performance, gets additional intensity against Kadane’s barely-there vocals. In the quieter moments, like the openings of “Crushing” or even more so, the flat-out lovely “Powder,” the intensity level is ratcheted even higher; the overall performance is not so much easy listening as it is a prompting to listeners, who must lean forward to catch everything. Add the intertwined guitar work of both Kadane brothers, who combine power and control excellently, and listeners need ask for little more.

10. The Last TimeIts been over five years since Helsinki band Flannelmouth released their
critically acclaimed but sadly overlooked debut album. With towering baritone
vocals, jangly guitars and positively infectious melodies, they excelled in the
overcrowded field of Brit-influenced indie rock. Now after years of hibernation the band strike back with a stellar sequel full
of elegantly dramatic guitar-pop. This one is a darker and more sombre affair,
but still as catchy and refreshingly free of the usual gothic excess. Balancing
some more subdued laments are pure ragers like the menacing disco-rock anthem
Make A Move. Far from settling for the usual solutions, theres certain subtle
brilliance both in the production and songwriting throughout the record. The
bar is set pretty high for the rest of 2010.http://www.flannelmouth.com

Cheapster is more like it… Trying to cash in on
Snow Patrol now. Good album nonetheless especially
if you missed it the first time now. EnjoyAMG says:
Snow Patrol’s 1999 disc on Jeepster Records
showcases the band’s sometimes-edgy indie rock and
occasionally spacy indie pop. The Edinburgh,
Scotland, trio mixes tempos immediately, starting
off with the crunchy “Downhill From Here” and the
exuberantly poppy “Starfighter Pilot.” The pace
slows down quickly with the third track, the
withdrawn and melancholy “The Last Show Ringing in
My Ears.” The borderline hip-hop beats of the fourth
track, “Absolute Gravity,” startle the listener,
making it clear that listening to the disc is going
to be a colorful ride. “Mahogany” is another
acoustic-based ballad, sticking out on a disc full
of non-traditional beats and chords. All of the
songs highlight the band’s earnest approach to
songwriting. Tracks like “Velocity Girl” and
“Favorite Friend” are some of the disc’s catchiest
and most endearing songs, calling upon a pop
sensibility that’s somehow different from the
standard 1990s indie artists. Over-indulgent song
titles like “One Hundred Things You Should Have Done
in Bed” and “When You’re Right You’re Right (Darth
Vader Bringing in His Washing Mix)” are examples of
the band’s unabashedly quirky approach to music.
They’re able to pull it off with their undeniable
musicianship and musical sensibilities. On Songs for
Polar Bears, Gary Lightbody appears on guitars,
vocals, and keyboards, while Mark McClelland chimes
in on bass and keyboards and drummer Jonny Quinn
rounds out the lineup. Guest artists include Isobel
Campbell, Richard Colburn, Fraser Simpson, and Tom
Simpson. The album was recorded in Edinburgh,
Scotland, by producer Jamie Watson.

Custard was an Australian indie rock band from Brisbane formed in 1990.
The band featured David McCormack on vocals and guitar, Paul Medew on bass, Matthew Strong on guitar and Shane Brunn on drums. Custard existed for about a decade (albeit with revolving line up of drummers – Gavin Herrenberg, Danny Plant, Glenn Thompson)
The band released five albums (Buttercup/Bedford, Wahooti Fandango, Wisenheimer, We Have the Technology and Loverama), two EPs (Gastanked and Brisbane) a 7″ single (“Rockfish Anna”), various CD singles, two compilations of re-issued and rare material (Wacked Not Wacky and Brisbane 1990-1994) and a posthumous greatest hits compilation entitled Goodbye Cruel World. During their heyday they were a popular live act, appearing prominently for several years in the Triple J Hottest 100.
